International Women’s Day: Celebrating progress and championing equality

International Women's Day at Gungho

Today, on International Women’s Day (IWD), we celebrate the remarkable social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. This day is not only a moment of recognition but also a powerful call to action for accelerating gender equality. Despite progress, many women and girls still face systemic barriers and injustices, particularly in regions where their rights remain restricted. This year’s United Nations theme, ‘For all women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment’, and the official International Women’s Day 2025 theme, ‘Accelerate Action’, underscore the urgent need for collective action to unlock equal opportunities, foster empowerment and build a future where no one is left behind. These themes also highlight the importance of inspiring the next generation, particularly young women, to drive meaningful change.

At Gungho, we believe that gender equality is not just an ideal, but a practice embedded in our culture. Our company was founded by Lucy, who left her corporate career to start Gungho from her kitchen table, seeking more flexibility to spend time with her young family. What began as a bold personal decision has since grown into a thriving, private equity-backed business with women holding key leadership positions. We are proud that approximately 42% of our workforce is female, spanning various roles and career stages. Gungho is committed to providing an inclusive environment where talent is nurtured, skills are developed, and opportunities for career progression are accessible to everyone.

Flexible working is at the heart of our culture. We recognise the importance of work-life balance, particularly for working parents, and we have structured our workplace to support this. Studies indicate that women still take on the majority of caregiving responsibilities, which is why offering flexible schedules—including remote work and adaptable hours—has been fundamental to our approach (The Guardian). Our four-day working week enables our employees to spend more meaningful time with their families, pursue personal passions and maintain a healthier balance between work and life. By prioritising flexibility, we have empowered our team members to reclaim their time and focus on what matters most to them.

Gungho is proud to have a leadership team where women play a pivotal role. With 50% of our executive team being female and many women in senior leadership positions, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where career progression is based on merit, ambition, and capability. Many of our leaders started their journeys at Gungho as Business Discovery Agents and have advanced through our ranks, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of employees. One of these leaders is Chloe, Chief Operating Officer and a key member of our executive team, who we recently interviewed about her inspiring journey from BDA to COO. In this, Chloe shares her experiences of growth, leadership and the opportunities that helped shape her success.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering women, breaking down barriers, and championing equality in every aspect of our business. To mark this occasion, we are sharing a special video featuring the incredible women of Gungho. They discuss what IWD means to them, the inspiring women who have influenced their journeys, and how Gungho has supported them in their careers. Their stories highlight the importance of fostering an inclusive, supportive workplace where women can thrive.

We spoke to some of the incredible women on Team Gungho about what International Women’s Day means to them. Watch the video below:
